While camping in Ellsworth, we enjoyed a day of a community festival, which included a chowder tasting competition. For $5 you could taste nine different chowders as many times as you wanted--and we did! The chowders were wonderful but very different from each other. Diane won a prize at one competitor's table that allowed us to go out for dinner at that restaurant that evening. It was great!
The following day we drove to Greenville and toured that area--enjoying marvelous foliage along the way. The little town of Greenville sits at the south end of Moosehead Lake and is the gateway to a large chunk of northern Maine that is nearly roadless. The day was cloudy and drizzly and there were few tourists about. Perhaps there would be more people around on a weekend or a sunny day.
We have discovered--as so many told us before we left home--that if you really want to explore an area, you MUST get off the beaten track!
